This book tells the story of a man who was called "Pi-ke-leng" by the community he served, who negotiated peace where armies failed, and whose office would shape how Malaysia governed race, labor, and immigration for the next 100 years. More than a biography, this is the story of how one man’s fluency in language — and trust — changed the fate of Chinese Malaya.
