James Murray Spangler (1848-1915), the American salesman and janitor who invented the first Hoover portable electric vacuum cleaner.

"Hoover" is used as a synonym for vacuum cleaner because the Hoover Company was one of the first and most dominant manufacturers of electric vacuum cleaners in the early 20th century. The brand became so popular, particularly in the UK and Ireland, that "hoover" became a genericized trademark used as a noun and a verb for vacuuming.
