Planetary Geodesy

Image
Planetary Geodesy has became topic of interest among geodesist and actively pursued in the past thirty years. Torge 2001 (Geodesy 3rd Edition) has listed the following reading as reference materials on lunar and planetary geodesy; Bills, BG and SP Synott (1987) Planetary Geodesy. Rev Geophys, 25:833-839 Kaula, WM  (1993) Higher order statistics of planetary gravities and topographies. Geophys Res Letters 20:2583-2586 Nerem, RS (1995) Terrestrial and planetary gravity fields. Gottfried Konecny (b.1930)

Image
Gottfried Konecny graduated with his first degree in Munich. Then he went to OSU under Fulbright scholarship and work under Prof Fred Doyle and graduated with MSc. Later, he continued doing his PhD in Munich. After completed his doctorate he went to Canada and work in UNB for twelve years. Later he went for sabbatical in Houston, Texas. There he work again with Doyle and was also involved with Nasa moon space program. There he worked on the selection of landing sites on the moon in the Apollo programme. Then he moved back to German teaching at Hannover. Konecny contribution to SpaceLab mission - read this (source -  spacelab ). The Metric Camera is a DLR experiment in imaging technology. The Metric Camera is considered to be the first civil spaceborne experiment dedicated to photogrammetry; it was proposed and managed by Gottfried Konecny (PI) of the Institute of Photogrammetry and Surveying at the University of Hannover, Germany. At the start of the 1980s, spaceborne imagery ...

Klaus Linkwitz (1948-2017)

Image
The following info on Prof Linkwitz was taken from his website in Stuttgart University; Klaus Linkwitz was born in Bad Oeynhausen and after school, military service as Luftwaffenhelfer, captivity and internship 1948 studied geodesy in Stuttgart and Munich. Since 1953 he has worked in practice in numerous engineering projects and surveying expeditions, especially in Central Asia - at this time pronounced pioneering achievements. His focus was in Afghanistan, where he worked as a project manager in road and tunnel construction. In 1960, Mr. Linkwitz earned his doctorate with his dissertation on the topic "Error Theory and Compensation of Route Networks According to the Theory of Elastic Systems". In 1964 he was appointed Full Professor and Director of the IAGB at the then TH, now University of Stuttgart. He held this position for more than 31 years and has made the institute world-famous for his work on engineering geodesy, photogrammetry, balancing and special ...
